HR for HR Team at NBCU Nets Honor for University Initiative

The HR for HR team at NBCUniversal supports the NBCUniversal HR community and their clients. The six-member, bicoastal team (pictured left to right) includes: Jenny Park, Coordinator; Ryan Scott, Coordinator; Carrie Maltese, Vice President; Elizabeth Michel, Director; Anna Arefian, Generalist; and Analisa Cortez, Generalist. During the first year of operation, the team launched HR for GOOD and tHRive University. The two initiatives helped the group garner CTHRA’s 2017 Team Innovator of the Year honor.

As HR for GOOD was detailed in the March/April issue of HR Pulse, this article will focus on the creation of tHRive University, a high-impact professional development program designed, developed and implemented by the HR for HR team in collaboration with members of the HR community.

Produced Here.” tHRive University empowers employees in the HR community to succeed at every stage of their career. The dynamic skills-based program directly aligns with NBCUniversal HR’s core competencies: adaptability, courage, execution excellence, professional presence, relationship building and strategic impact.

In addition to enhancing skills, the courses build community and provide networking opportunities with NBCUniversal’s senior HR managers, business leaders and subject matter experts. Courses are offered in New York and Los Angeles, while upper-level courses feature nomination based small class sizes, instruction in NBCU’s New York Talent Lab and immersive independent study.

The robust introductory curriculum features the following courses:

HR 101 - Welcome New Hires: This course for new HR hires provides the foundational resources necessary to be successful in HR. tHRive University’s Dean Patricia Langer, who is also NBCUniversal’s Executive Vice President of HR, addresses attendees.

Improving Performance Through PIPs: This course covers the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) process with guidance from Employment Law and HR colleagues. It addresses what a PIP is and when one should be considered; identifies stakeholders; and explains how PIPs are executed and why they are integral to people management.

The Fundamentals of HR Systems: This course provides new HR employees with an overview of HR systems, including SAP, Brassring, SecurePro, Onboard and BW Reporting.

Immigration Overview: Thiis e-learning course helps HR professionals better understand the immigration process, with guidance from NBCU’s Employment Law team. Attendees explore cases typically seen at NBCU and learn what HR needs to know when addressing immigration questions

Understanding the Conflict of Interest Policy: With guidance from the NBCU Compliance team, this course teaches the what, why and how of the policy and how to address employee disclosure.

Key to tHRive University’s mandate is empowering HR professionals at every stage of their careers. To that end, the HR for HR team developed numerous advanced courses and independent study opportunities for high-potential HR employees. These include:

Conducting Investigations to Resolution: This immersive and interactive course provides HR representatives with a thorough grounding in internal investigations and how to properly conduct internal investigations to minimize legal liability and reduce employee complaints.

LEAD for HR: Through a partnership with NBCUniversal’s Talent Development team and a certified facilitator, this course helps build better leadership skills and management behaviors for experienced HR leaders who have impact in a changing organization. Participants receive a customized 360-feedback assessment and targeted skills building.

Competency Partnership with a Senior Human Resources Manager (SHRM): In this 12-month independent study opportunity, HR employees work with a Senior HR Manager to engage our community around the six HR competencies (adaptability, courage, execution excellence, professional presence, relationship building and strategic impact).

tHRive University Advisory Board: During this nomination-based 12-month independent study, HR employees work as a team to develop content for tHRive University.

PathFinder Program: HR employees volunteer to support and guide new HR hires and act as resources for information about navigating the culture and practices of the HR community and NBCU.

Cooperative Education Program (Co-Op): During this 3- to 12-month immersive independent study, HR employees receive career training in different business areas. Assignments are offered on an ad-hoc basis dependent upon business need.

Since tHRive University was launched in April of 2017, over 350 HR employees have attended courses offered by tHRive University. In addition to the course offerings, the HR for HR team reimagined the annual year-end development program and now offers more frequent “meetups” to provide HR employees with multiple opportunities throughout the year to develop, engage and interact with colleagues.

CTHRA congratulates NBCUniversal’s HR for HR team on being named 2017 Team Innovator of the Year. We look forward to the awards luncheon which will be held on October 26 in Philadelphia during the HR Symposium.
